Without defining the relationship, it’s challenging to set boundaries, establish expectations, and build a solid foundation for the future. It will leave you confused and emotionally drained.

    If you’ve defined the relationship, simply have that conversation or move on. Here are some steps you can take:

    Sometimes we enter relationships and have bad toxic habits that we think are normal when they’re not. Habits that are more than likely normalized by the new generations.     1) Blowing someone’s cell phone up

    It can be easy to get caught up in your emotions when you’re upset or sad, or when you want to talk to someone. Constantly calling and texting someone when you want to speak to them and they’re not answering is inappropriate. If they don’t answer the phone the first time, give them time to return the call. It shows a lack of respect and boundaries. Unless something is wrong and it’s an emergency, then the person might really have a life and is busy. On top of all that, it can come off a bit crazy.

    2) Calling them out of their name

    Your partner calling you out of your name is one of the biggest signs of disrespect. Vulgarity in general shouldn’t be used to get a point across. It’s disrespectful and is completely out of line. If it’s not your name, a term of endearment, or a puppy name then it should not fly.

    3) Blocking/Unblocking

    The entire point of blocking someone is so that the person has no way to contact you. Intentionally blocking someone to make them upset is childlike behavior. Blocking and unblocking someone is not a healthy way to communicate when issues arise. If anything, it always makes the situation worse. If you really need to block someone, please do it logically and keep them blocked.

    When you start doing things you wouldn’t normally do, it’s not a healthy situation. Let’s use revenge cheating as an example. If you’re the type of person who is totally against cheating, and you find yourself cheating just to get back at your partner. next thing you know, you’ve backtracked on your morals. This leads me to my next toxic relationship habit…

    5) Cheating

    We all know that cheating is one of the most terrible acts you can commit, and there isn’t much left that needs to be said about it. Cheating will not only destroy the relationship, but it also destroys trust, character, self-esteem, and sense of self-worth. It shows lack of morals and self-control.

    6) Gaslighting

    According to Psychology Today, gaslighting is a form of manipulation and psychological control. Victims of gaslighting are deliberately and systematically fed false information that leads them to question what they know to be true, often about themselves. When someone is doing this to you, nine times out of ten, they won’t change. Leave.

    When you have rules set for yourself and your partner does not respect your limitations or violates them then they simply do not care. You most likely won’t agree on a lot of things, which makes it hard to work with. Don’t ignore the signs. They will also not take you seriously, because you don’t even take your boundaries seriously.

    Don’t ever settle. Once you’ve made it clear you know what you want, stand on it. When someone is hesitant about what their plans are with you, then that should be loud and clear. They may want something, just not with you. Situationships are a complete waste of time and energy and someone always gets hurt in the end.

    The only way for a situationship to work out successfully is if both parties agree on it and are aware of what it may come with. If someone is okay with “going with the flow”, there are normally other parts of their lives they have also been “going with the flow” with. There are no clear intentions with you or their life.

    If someone is in and out of your life, take that as a sign, and leave them alone. Someone who has genuine intentions and concern for you and your feelings will provide clarity without confusion. It is up to you to decide whether to deal with the inconsistency or not.

    10) Ghosting during difficult times

    Ghosting someone is one of the most spineless and inconsiderate things you can do. If they don’t care enough to communicate with you, they are a coward. Everyone knows that communication is the key to a healthy relationship. It is immature to leave someone hanging, period. Never take someone ghosting you personally. It has everything to do with how they handle situations, and nothing to do with you.

    For instance, your boyfriend telling you “Please don’t do ABC, my friends don’t like it when you do that.” is policing your character and is controlling. Controlling what your partner does (or wears), is one toxic habit most people don’t even believe is manipulating.

    Entitlement is the belief that one is deserving of certain privileges and/or benefits without having to earn them. People who feel entitled tend to lack self-awareness, lack of empathy, a sense of victimhood, or a lack of understanding of privilege; and all of these things are toxic.

    This is something so many people have a hard time with. Once you open yourself up you may be scared that you’ll be taken advantage of when the truth is, that only happens with the wrong people.     Employees are no longer sacrificing their mental health.

    Thoughts of quiet quitting, loud quitting, and even fantasy quitting occupied many of my friends’ minds after the topic surfaced on social media for a few months. Just last year, my friends and I were fresh out of college and happily running full speed into the business world. However, now they look like disappointed toddlers if the word “work” is even uttered. Sadly, this is the reaction many employees have when discussing their careers.

    Multiple social media users have proudly announced leaving their jobs to enter new fields, some have bluntly quit with no backup plans and others have even celebrated getting fired. Yes, you read that correctly, celebrated being fired! Their reactions have me wondering if quitting is becoming the new form of self-care or even just a desperate moment for a breath of fresh air.

    Growing up my mother would always say, “desperate people, do desperate things.” I never realized the true meaning behind it until that day.

    My friend called me and said she did the unthinkable, quit! All my friends immediately did a “Deliver Us From Eva” moment. Everyone hurried on the phone to comfort her with words that seemed to be difficult to find. We talked for hours while digging deep into her reasons for quitting. 

    My other friends even talked about their reasons for wanting to quit. We realized everyone’s reasons were no different than the reasons we read online. For them, it was a relief to know they weren’t expecting perfection. I have listed down below poor decisions or experiences that led employees to leave their jobs. 

    1. Lacking A Internship – She contributed to her defeat

    One of my friends admitted that obtaining no prior experience led to her leaving the company. On paper, the job was everything she could have asked for, but the reality was she hated it. She said she felt the company made the position sound sweeter than it was. However, it all boiled down to her not going after an internship for that specific role in college. Instead, she ran after all the wrong things.

    It is necessary for every employee to see a reflection of themselves within the company, especially in leadership. I’m not sure how to explain it, but seeing someone that looks like I do, gives me a touch of comfort.

    I watched a video of Viola Davis speaking about the lack of payment within the acting industry. I have witnessed my friends speak of the lack of pay within their field. The cost of living has risen for Nashville, but jobs are refusing to increase employees’ salaries.

    Employees can not do their best if they’re stressed about paying utilities or rent. It is difficult to focus when something lingers in the back of someone’s head.

    3. Burn-out – Companies and employers have contributed to this defeat

    According to the world health organization, burnout syndrome is a result of chronic workplace stress that has not been taken care of. It is described in three dimensions: 

    • feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion
    • increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job
    • reduced professional efficacy.

    Furthermore, these are the significant consequences of burnout:

    • Excessive stress
    • Fatigue
    • Insomnia
    • Sadness, anger, or irritability
    • Alcohol or substance misuse
    • Heart disease
    • High blood pressure
    • Type 2 diabetes
    • Vulnerability to illnesses

    4. A Toxic Workplace – Multiple Factors Contribute

    Signs of a toxic workplace aren’t as obvious as people would believe. These types of workspaces can act like a bad relationship. Toxic behavior from work associates can be difficult to point out if they are accepted in the workplace. Unfortunately, that is how it all starts. My mother has always said, one poisoned piece of fruit has the ability to spoil an entire bowl of fruit if it stays there long enough.

    • High Turnover: When the work environment has nothing good to offer except dysfunction, poor morale, and sickness, colleagues will start heading for the door to find a better situation. If you notice a high turnover rate in your company or department, take that as a sign of a toxic workplace.
    • Cliques, Gossip, and Rumors: Everyone seems to be out for themselves, and there are no genuine friendships among coworkers. There’s lots of infighting and paranoia as well as office gossip and rumors.
    • Narcissistic Leadership: Your higher-ups or boss demand that you always agree with them, tell them they’re right, and feel they’re above the rules. They expect everyone else to be perfect while they can meet lower standards.
    • Little to No Enthusiasm: Look around the office. Does anyone appear to be happy working there? Is anyone ever smiling? If people typically seem downright miserable to be working at the company, you can assume the work environment is toxic.
    • Employee Sickness: Toxic work environments lead to employee burnout, fatigue, and illness due to high levels of stress that wreak havoc on our bodies. If people are calling in sick or worse, are working sick, that’s a good sign of a toxic work environment.
    • Lack of Communication or Negative Communication: You and others don’t get the necessary information to do your job. You work hard with no positive feedback and no recognition, and you might even be told to be glad you have a job at all.

    I conclude with my belief, letting go of what causes your mental health to decline is self-care; that counts for your job too.

    Here are some practical life hacks I find helpful, to get you through everyday life just a tad bit easier. These are some of the best life hacks that I personally use and find very useful. Prepare to be amazed.

    Life hack #1: Wake up early every day.

    Waking up early every morning between 5-8am results in more productivity and a longer-lasting day overall. The earlier you wake up, the more refreshed you’ll feel throughout the day. Of course, you would have to go to sleep earlier to achieve this, but it is worth it.

    Life hack #2: Learn how to do your own hair.

    It’ll save you a ton of money learning how to do your favorite styles whenever you want. Utilize YouTube and practice on others, then when you’ve mastered it you can do it for others. Everyone’s hair is not the same and should be treated accordingly. Learn your hair type and give it the correct attention it needs. I consider this self-care and you’ll notice a huge difference.

    Life hack #3: Learn a new skill.

    One of my favorite practical life hacks! You’ve been in school learning your whole childhood. When you decide to learn new things on your own, you’re pretty much on top of the world outside of school. Being well-versed in certain skills opens a door to opportunities that fall in your lap. Your 9-5 will make you money, and your 9-12 will set you free. Right now, I’m learning how to code. My next venture is photography/graphic design. Both will take me to many places.

    Life hack #4: Follow people on social media who look like you/inspire you.

    This is for those people who constantly find themselves comparing them to those they see on social media. If you follow people who look like you vs those who you think meet society’s standards, YOUR qualities will be the set beauty standards. Follow those who are where you want to be also, hopefully pushing you to be where they are.

    Life hack #5: Look at coworkers as coworkers only, and not friends.

    When you start a job with brand new coworkers, be careful with sharing too much information. Be careful who you follow on social media as well. Not everyone in the professional setting is your friend because once you’re no longer valuable, you’re easily replaceable.

    Life hack #6: Have a reward for every goal you set.

    When you set a goal for yourself and plan a reward once you’ve achieved that goal–studies say, you’re 5x more motivated to work harder and achieve said goal.

    Life hack #7: Never make an important decision when you’re sad/angry.

    Making decisions strictly out of emotion is a dangerous game. It won’t be based on logic or reasoning, but on how you temporarily feel in the moment. Wait until you’re cooled down or you’ve thought everything through. Then you’ll be able to use your head and not your heart to make the best decision.

    Life hack #8: Never keep anything important in your car.

    Lately, car robberies are becoming a trend and it’s safe to say your car isn’t the place to keep important things. Other than the things that need to be kept in my glovebox, I don’t keep anything valuable in my car. Even when I’m stopping at the store. Believe me, they’ll tag you anywhere.

    Life hack #9: If you can’t remember someone’s name, ask them how to spell it first.

    This will avoid the awkward “I’m sorry, what is your name again?” question, that some people may find offensive. Most people just aren’t good with names, but not everyone quite understands that.

    Life hack # 10: Practice “Out of sight, out of mind”.

    Want to get over someone quickly, or easily? Cut off communication completely. Unfollow them on social media, delete your text thread/their number, and delete any photos you all have together. This helps me a ton, because the less I see them, the less I think of them. Next thing I know, I’ve probably forgotten about them. This will help you move on and reflect on the situation without them being in the way to distract you. When you guys do end up talking again, you will most likely be in a better place.

    Life hack #11: Stop holding people to certain expectations.

    This life hack is nothing but a constant disappointment. What is, you ask? Holding people to certain standards that they never proved to you they could hold in the first place. I learned the hard way to stop doing this because not everyone is capable of meeting your expectations. Get a chance to see what they’re about first, then decide from there.

    Life hack #12: If someone has wronged you and left you hurt, write your feelings out in a letter to them and burn it.

    This is a method someone shared with me that has contributed to my healing process tremendously. A lot of built-up emotions can be let go by doing this ritual. Release your thoughts, let them travel through your arm, through the pen, and onto your paper. Read it aloud and burn those thoughts. You will feel 10x better.

    Know your worth, then add tax. What does this mean? It begins with confidence, self-respect, self-worth, and boundaries. These three simple components will help you dodge a lot of chaos in life. Let’s discuss these components and the steps to knowing your worth.

    Living in a scarcity mindset will make you settle for less than you deserve, be undervalued, and rationalize it. You must believe believe it first. You can’t add taxes when the product is free in the first place.

    1. Set the tone

    First impressions last forever. Keep that in mind the first time you introduce yourself to someone. That is when people begin to form the idea of what type of person you might be based on their assumptions. So it is essential to approach every situation with confidence, so even if you don’t believe so, it will come off that you are confident to that person. Even if you aren’t quite yet.

    When it comes to confidence, sometimes it’s okay to fake the funk. Becoming confident can be challenging at first, but that’s totally normal. Even if you must fake it at first, continue to do so until confidence becomes a part of who you are daily. Walk in every room as you own it.

    This is where respect is earned and determines how others will treat you. This does not mean you must prove your worth to anyone, but you must be it. Ensuring you are not treated otherwise is a part of trusting in yourself. Remember, you can be confident without being arrogant.

    This is important because it lets people know you mean business.

    2. Act on your worth! Pride is one powerful tool

    Giving people the benefit of the doubt rarely works out in the long run. You tell yourself, “They’ll change,” or “They’re just going through a tough time right now”. No, they won’t. Waiting for someone to change is the biggest mistake you can make on the journey to knowing your worth. When someone shows you their true colors, BELIEVE THEM. If you say you are no longer dealing with something, keep that promise and do not look back. As a matter of fact, stand on it.

    Pro tip #1: When you first get to know someone, they’ll immediately show you their red flags.

    Demand your needs! You tell your supervisor you need requirements x, y, and z, or else you will find another job. They’ll meet them if they truly appreciate you and know you’re an asset to the company. The same thing goes for your relationships. If that person you have been dating is choosing not to give you what you need, then you let them know this will not work, etc. The one time you abandon those standards, it becomes a habit, and no one will take you seriously. Know your worth.

    Pro tip #2: Knowing your self-worth is very attractive to most and will help you avoid f*ckboys entirely.

    3. Settling only leads to poor judgment, have some dignity!

    Allowing yourself to settle will put you in a space of comfort that you’ll never be happy in. Yes, comfort can be good, but it is detrimental to the process of knowing your worth. You get used to being treated like crap and begin to think that it is normal. I would describe settling for less as “toxic comfortability.” When we hear toxic, we automatically know that it means something or a situation is not hazardous to our health. You know you deserve so much more when you have reached that point in your life.

    Unfortunately, no one wants to be around someone who settles for less than what they deserve because people like that lack a sense of dignity. With that being said, they’ll also treat others less than what they deserve. If you feel like you are not worthy of certain things or a certain life, why should anyone else be worthy of anything? This is the exact mindset of people who don’t mind settling for whatever they can get. No one will value your opinion because they will see it unworthy, the same way you see yourself.

    4. You’ll regret not treating yourself better early on

    When others see how you view yourself, they will treat you as such, which can also lead to a continuous cycle of being taken advantage of. That should not be the reason you treat yourself as worthy, though. Once you have finally reached the point where you know your worth, you will look back on everything that you have put up with in the past. You may feel a little disappointed, but most importantly, you will feel the growth. Your life will also reflect it. That is a part of the growth process.

    Once you reach a point of disgust, that’s when you know things have changed. Almost like when you eat something and it tastes disgusting…you’ll probably never eat said food again. Surrounding yourself with people who will challenge you to improve is also an important part of the process. I almost 100% of the time want and expect a challenge from everyone around me. Everyone has to want growth.

    5. Have Non-Negotiables

    Non-negotiables are your boundaries that are NOT open for debate. I cannot stress the importance of setting boundaries for yourself. When people try to cross those boundaries, that is when your self-respect comes in. Figure out those non-negotiables that you will not tolerate and apply them to everyday life, then don’t look back. Know your worth, then add tax!
